about the landfill

Unified Disposal was created in 1983 to service 3 counties: Hill County, Blaine County, and Big Sandy in Chouteau County. Unified Disposal is run under the power of the Unified Disposal Board. The Board is formed of 9 board members, 5 representatives from Hill County, 3 representatives from Blaine County, and 1 from Big Sandy in Chouteau County. These representatives on the board are the voices of their county to make sure that it is fair for all 3 counties that are serviced. The board decides the household fee and the fee charged per ton; we like to pride ourselves on having one of the lower-end costs as a landfill. We want to make sure that it is affordable for everyone as much as we can. However, the price is set where it is because of prices going up on everything. For example, the insurance for the landfill was increased by around 400% because most landfills in the state of Montana were dropped. And the only one that will ensure the landfill is a company from New York. So, unfortunately, the board raised the rates back in May of 2024 for per tonnage. And household units were raised last in 2025 to cover the cost of insurance. Also, the prices of everything else have gone up as well, like fuel to keep the equipment running, electricity, parts to fix equipment that breaks down, and many other things that all cost money.

Unified Disposal is run with 8-10 employees throughout the year. Unified disposal does not pick up garbage from garbage cans in front of houses. We only pick up the big cans at the local dump site, which are Big Sandy, Red Rock, Rudyard, Gilford, Fresno, Hingham, Cottonwood, Chinook, Zurich, Harlem, Beaver Creek park, Tunner, and Holgend.

If you are looking for who does the pickup in city limits, that would be City Works (406)265-4941

If you are looking for who does the pickup out of city limits, that is most likely garbage inc. (406)265-8379 (they are the ones that have dumpsters for rental.) We do not rent our out.
